Nieuwe Bohio

The 2024 Tilting Axis research fellowship, supported by Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam, seeks to embark on an immersive journey into the indigenous Taíno and Kalinago cultures of St. Kitts & Nevis and the wider Caribbean, with the objective of creating a transformative virtual reality experience.

This immersive experience will serve as the foundation for an eclectic spectrum of practical applications including architectural research, sustainable community planning, and the development of an interactive 3D video game universe.

Legacy Meets Revival

Across the region, historical figures like Nanny of the Maroons, Paul Bogle, & Bob Marley (Jamaica), Che Guevara (Cuba) or in Trinidad, cultural icons like Calypso & Carnival are anchors around which they centre their identity. In St. Kitts & Nevis, such figures remain understated or generally unknown.

Legacy Meets Revival is a documentary series that will unearth these local heroes through semi-narrative visuals to creatively depict the stories of historical 16th - 17th-century rebels and revolutionaries who have been lost to obscurity for the last few centuries.

"Antillia is Not a Real Place" is a multifaceted project led by Caribbean researcher and filmmaker Klieon John, delving into the region's complex identity and ties to Africa, South America, and Europe. This exploration spans writings, poetry, podcast interviews, VR experiences, and gamification, illuminating historical and cultural narratives.

Players navigate rich landscapes, exploring transit, community resilience, identity, decolonization, and spirituality. Encounter mythical creatures, solve puzzles, and uncover hidden histories in this narrative-driven adventure set in a captivating world shaped by folklore and history.
